One Region, Several Very Different Roofing Problems
The Western Bay looks like one place on a map and behaves like four or five when it comes to roofing. A roof at Waihi Beach is fighting salt and wind together. A roof in Tauriko is eighteen months old and belongs to a builder's programme. A roof in Otumoetai is sixty years old, on a house whose framing was never designed for the weight of what somebody put on it in the 1980s. A packhouse roof at Te Puke is a commercial building with an internal gutter problem.
What that means practically is that the specification changes with the address. We ask where you are before we quote, because how far you are from breaking surf changes the substrate, the coating, the fixings and the flashing material - and getting that wrong is how a thirty-year roof becomes a fifteen-year roof.
Roofers Across Tauranga and the Western Bay
We are based at Mount Maunganui and work right across Tauranga city and the Western Bay of Plenty, from Waihi Beach in the north through to Te Puke in the east.
Roofing in Tauranga
The city itself, from the older Judea, Gate Pa and Greerton streets through to the newer subdivisions. A great deal of that housing stock went up in the 1960s and 70s, which puts an unusual number of roofs at the end of their working life all at once.
Roofing in Mount Maunganui
Salt-laden air off both the harbour and the ocean is the deciding factor here. Fixings, flashings and coating grade all get chosen for a marine environment, because a specification that lasts forty years inland will not last twenty on the Mount.
Roofing in Papamoa
Long straight runs on newer single-storey homes, and a southerly that drives sand and rain flat against the roof rather than down onto it. Ridge, barge and apron detailing matters more here than the choice of roof sheet.
Roofing in Bethlehem
Larger sections and a lot of two-storey and split-level homes, which means more valleys, more flashings and more scaffolding. Complex roofs are where the price differences between roofing quotes actually come from.
Roofing in Otumoetai and Matua
Established peninsula suburbs with water on three sides. Plenty of original concrete tile and older corrugate that has done fifty years and is now streaking, cracking and letting go around the fixings.
Roofing in Welcome Bay
Hillside sections with steeper pitches and awkward access, often with mature trees hanging over the roof. Leaf litter blocking the gutters is as common a call-out here as an actual roof fault.
Roofing in Pyes Pa and Tauriko
Tauranga's main growth corridor, so most of our work out here is new builds - roofing to a builder's programme, with the frame open and the next trade already waiting on us.
Roofing in Te Puna
Kiwifruit and avocado country on the road to Katikati. Lifestyle blocks, implement sheds and packhouses as well as houses, and shelter belts that drop debris onto a roof all year round.
Roofing in Omokoroa
A peninsula that has grown very fast, so it is an unusual mix: brand new roofs on new subdivisions alongside 1970s baches that have never been touched, all of it exposed to wind off the harbour on both sides.
Roofing in Katikati
Rural Western Bay. Longer drives, bigger buildings, and a lot of packhouses and implement sheds where the roof is effectively the whole building rather than one part of it.
Roofing in Te Puke
Orchard country to the east, and wetter than the city. Gutter and downpipe sizing genuinely matters here - spouting that only just copes in Tauranga will overflow in a Te Puke downpour.
Roofing in Waihi Beach
The northern end of our patch and the most exposed of the lot. Coastal wind and salt together, on a lot of holiday houses that sit empty for months and only get looked at once something has already failed.
Coastal, Semi-Coastal or Inland?
New Zealand roofing specification uses environmental categories based on how corrosive the atmosphere is, and distance from breaking surf is the main driver. It is genuinely the most important question on the whole quote, and it is the one most likely to be skipped.
In broad terms across our patch:
- Severe marine. Right on the ocean at Mount Maunganui, the Papamoa foreshore and Waihi Beach. Needs the most corrosion-resistant substrate available, and stainless fixings are not negotiable.
- Coastal. Most of Mount Maunganui, Papamoa, Matua, Omokoroa and the harbour edge. Coastal-grade product and fixings throughout, including on the spouting and the flashings.
- Sheltered inland. Bethlehem, Pyes Pa, Tauriko, and inland Te Puna and Katikati. Standard specification generally performs well, though we still look at individual sites - a house on a ridge with a clear line to the sea is more exposed than its postcode suggests.
We will tell you which category we think your address sits in and why, and if it is borderline we will specify up rather than down. The cost difference between a coastal specification and a standard one is small. The cost difference between a roof that lasts thirty years and one that lasts fifteen is not.
How Far Do You Go?
Tauranga city, Mount Maunganui and Papamoa are our core patch and we are there constantly. Bethlehem, Otumoetai, Matua, Welcome Bay, Greerton, Pyes Pa and Tauriko are all a short drive. Te Puna, Omokoroa, Katikati, Te Puke and Waihi Beach we cover regularly.
If you are just outside that - further into the Kaimai, out towards Whakatane, or up the coast - ring us anyway. For the right job we travel, and it costs nothing to ask.
